Environmental Impact Statement for
Proposed Water Storage Ponds at the Evergreen Precinct
Constructive Solutions Pty Ltd (CSPL) has been engaged by MPSC to prepare an EIS for the proposed Water Storage Ponds at the Evergreen Precinct, Moree.
Water for the artesian spa industry in Moree is drawn from the Great Artesian Basin to supply the spa industry, including the Moree Hot Artesian Pool Complex which is owned by MPSC. Currently the spent spa water is discharging in to the Mehi River.
Spent spa water isno longer considered suitable by the Office of Environment and Heritage for discharge to the Mehi River. In order to achieve an improved environmental outcome, alternative options for disposal have been investigated by Council, with the construction of water storage ponds at the Evergreen Precinct being identified as the preferred strategy.
Moree Water Skiing Club (MWSC) approached Council as to the potential for the water storage ponds to be built to accommodate water skiing. Following investigations, Council has identified three (3) water storage options for consideration and has subsequently obtained the Director-General Requirements (DGRs) from the Department of Planning and Infrastructure for the preparation of an EIS to assess the impacts of these options.
The three (3) options identified are summarised below:
- Option 1 – Construction of evaporation ponds totalling 70ha water surface area to a depth of 1m.
- Option 2 – Construction of water ski lakes totalling 37ha of water surface area to a depth of 2.3m.
- Option 3 – Construction of water ski lakes totalling 37ha of water surface area to a depth of 2.3m. Additionally, camping facilities/amenities will be constructed.
All options require other associated works, including the construction of an access road. Current access to the site is obtained via Barton Plains Road.
Further details relating to the EIS process, including a proposed process flowchart, schematics of the proposed options, and details of upcoming community meetings can be found by clicking the relevant tabs on the left-hand side of the page.
